People who want the title before they start becoming a leader have a basic misunderstanding of leadership.
Leaders who lead without a title will soon become the leaders with the title. But you can't get the order wrong.
No one follows a leader just because they have a title. Very often, they are repelled by a poor leader with a title. It's the principle that says you'll be judged more harshly by saying you have it all figured out.
Leaders who get it are the ones who want to grow themselves and grow others at the same time. They do what they say they're going to do and they build value throughout the entire process. They don't wait until they are given the proper authority and title to start leading.
Rarely do you get picked to start leading anything of substance, that's why, as Seth Godin says, you must "pick yourself"
